Putting the “You” in the Menu

When celebrating someone special, we often incorporate their unique personality into all aspects of the event, from the choice of location and the style of the invitations to the general colour scheme, table decorations and of course the speeches.

But why not also consider them when preparing the event menu?

Here are five ways to add a personal touch to the food at your next celebration.

1. Likes and dislikes

While it may sound obvious, the first way to begin customising the menu at your loved one’s celebration is by avoiding the foods that they avoid themselves.

A vegetarian would much rather delight in a meat-free menu then have to select the one dish available to them. Likewise, someone who’s not keen on vegetables may not enjoy a salad buffet. Be mindful of allergies and intolerances as well as general dislikes.

Once those are off the menu, consider favourite fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains. What more special way to celebrate this special person than with a menu that they personally will adore?

2. Cuisines

Perhaps there are specific flavours or cuisines that the special person prefers. Did a recent trip to Japan open the gates to a love of sashimi, yakitori and gyoza or a teenage visit to Italy cement an eternal love for all things pasta?

Also, be sure to consider the foods from the specific cultural background unique to the party person for other personal ways to celebrate them. Guests will equally enjoy a meal that incorporates these individual delights, rather than a standard or generic celebration menu they could potentially taste at any other function.

3. Nostalgia

Everyone has a favourite dish, be it the very specific art of eggs – soft-boiled, hard-boiled, poached, sunny-side-up, scrambled or fried – for breakfast atop another certain type of bread, a particular chop salad or Reuben sandwich for lunch or nanna’s schnitzel and roast potatoes for dinner. Think back to a specific meal that brings beautiful memories to your special someone. Why not include a chef’s interpretation of this favourite nostalgic dish to really make the celebration about them?

4. Colour

Think outside the pallet and theme a course to a favourite colour. Imagine abundant, overfilled platters of vibrant green vegetables with succulent herb crusted chicken with a salsa verde, sumptuous charred corn and red capsicum tacos with turmeric rice or a pastel wonderland dessert table with rose-water and pistachio nougat and ombre pink and purple cupcakes. The feast of colour will enhance the flavour and overall food experience for guests and the person of the moment alike.

5. Personality

There is nothing more personal than personality. Don’t be scared to enhance the food with some extra sweetness or even spice if this reflects their character.

Nobody is completely vanilla. Consider the specific hobbies, interests and passions of your loved one to truly inject a customised approach to the menu.

Theme an entire course around a passion or hobby. For instance, a budding footy fan may love a sports themed entrée with mini burgers, hot dogs, buckets of chips and soda. Similarly, those who love whimsy would be taken by a magical dessert buffet complete with enchanting meringue toadstools and marshmallow fairy pops. Guests will truly get a sense of who they are celebrating while the party person will love the personalised approach.
